With a recent leak of BlackBerry 10.2, a BlackBerry user in Poland took the time to create a changelog listing some of the new features that apparently will be coming with the updated OS build. As you might already know, the BlackBerry 10.2 update brings support for some Android apps. It also improves 'system performance' and app support. With the update, BlackBerry Hub will allow you to determine which messages get priority treatment based on rules that you select. You can also decide on a text message that will go out to a caller if you choose to ignore his phone call. That is a feature that has been available on other platforms for some time now.

BlackBerry has added actionable notifications on the top of the screen along with visual notifications on the lockscreen and there will be a separate notification for each BBM group. While new wallpaper will be available for the Home screen, there will also be a dedicated icon for BlackBerry Hub and the Home screen will also offer a new Quick Settings menu.

Also included in BlackBerry 10.2 is a Task Manager to check which apps are using too much battery life and are hogging the phone's internal system. A new weather app will be available along with a native version ofEvernote. After the update is installed, you will be able to change the 'clicking' sound for keys other than letters and numbers. And for the first time ever in a BlackBerry OS, multiple alarms can be set. Now, this might not seem like a big deal for those sporting phones running on other platforms, but for BlackBerry owners, this is a first!

With BlackBerry 10.2, users will be able to edit photographs before sharing them or using them for wallpaper. The browser will offer a reversable color mode (white text on a black background), among other changes. And the phone will support Wi-Fi Direct and new NFC Smart Tag categories.

If you're a BlackBerry 10 user, this should get you excited, anticipating the update. While some of these new features have been available on other ecosystems for some time, it doesn't lessen the fact that BlackBerry 10 users will soon be able to have them as well.

Hi-res photos of the Porsche Design BlackBerry leak out

Turns out that the back plate of a possible Porsche Design BlackBerry what we showed you the other 

day was indeed a heads up that a previously unknown BlackBerry device is in the works. 

An early prototype has been leaked out by Vietnamese Tinhte, and touts a design reminiscent of the BlackBerry P'9981 – a mix of leather and aluminum. According to N44B, the device will be called BlackBerry P`9982 and will be based on the BlackBerry Z10. We're also told that the device will, once again, feature a unique UI on top of BlackBerry 10.

Availability is hinted as somewhere in the middle of 2014, with a price range of up to $2000.

Apple patent looks to solve problems inherent to OLED displays

Apple has yet to actually release a device that uses an OLED display, although the technology has been rumored to come to Apple's various mobile devices from time to time. But, just because the tech hasn't been in an Apple product doesn't mean that Apple hasn't been working on OLED displays. A new patent shows that Apple has been trying to solve some of the inherent problems with OLED.

According to the USPTO, Apple has created a way to help with the problem of OLED displays "aging" faster than LCD displays. While OLED displays have the benefits of thinner and lighter than LCD (something body-image obsessed Apple is always looking for), the light output can change over time. Apple's filing for "Organic light emitting diode having photodiodes" uses photosensors built into the display to detect these changes and compensate accordingly. 

Additionally, the multiple photosensors would be able to act as light meters for different areas of the display, so if the top part of your screen is in sunlight, but the lower is in shade, the display can adjust and change the brightness in different pixel groups in order to have the best display for different lighting conditions. 

All in all, it sounds like some pretty good ideas. Whether or not they make it into an actual device is another story.

Samsung announces dual-mode LTE versions of the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 Mini

Just in case there weren't enough variants of the Samsung Galaxy S4 on the market for you, Samsung has announced two more. It turns out that both the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S4 Mini are going to be released with versions capable of dual-mode LTE. These models will join the ranks of the Galaxy S4 Active, and the Galaxy S4 Zoom.

Samsung claims that the devices are the first in the world to support both the TDD-LTE and FDD-LTE standards although the ZTE LTE Grand Era may hold the actual claim to that title. FDD-LTE is the current standard around the world, but TDD-LTE is the next step in LTE evolution, and is only available in a few networks around the world.

Nokia Pro Cam app gets update

The Nokia Pro Cam app, which lets you control the settings of the rear camera on the Nokia Lumia 1020, allowing the camera to take 38MP photos and more, has been updated by Nokia. The update now addsexposure bracketing to the functions of the rear camera that you can personalize using the app. The tool allows you to take a series of photographs using 3 to 5 different exposure settings. Among the choices allowed are -5EV to +5EV, -1EV to +1EV and -2EV to +2EV.

In plain English, you can take a number of photos consecutively, each with a different exposure setting. This increases the chances that a picture you just shot will have at least one perfect outcome. In addition, it will allow those into photography to use the different exposures to create a final picture using a "homemade" HDR on a PC. Some smartphone cameras do this automatically by stitching together a series of different exposures of the same shot to create one outstanding photograph.

Google's new Nexus 7 hits US Google Play store - but Staples has $30 discount

Google's new Nexus 7 has already landed at some retailers and online stores, but now it's officially available for purchase on the Google Play store.
Google announced that its new Nexus 7 would be available to all US customers on the Google Play store from Friday. The rest of the world - such as the UK, Canada, Germany and France - is still waiting on a rollout confirmation from Google.
The 16GB and 32GB models cost $229 and $269, respectively - and both have an estimated shipping date of 30 July. The 32GB LTE version should launch for $349 through AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile.

But that's not all: Staples is selling the new 16GB model for $199 and new 32GB model for $239 through its online website or by phone. That's a $30 discount. Just enter the following coupon code upon checkout to get the cheaper prices: 41178. The coupon code expires 28 July.

"Designed not as an early adopter’s phone, but instead as an everyman phone, the X is the new Motorola’s first attempt to push some serious volume under new-ish owner Google," claims Evan Blass, the man behind the @evleaks tag.

With that in mind the images make sense, suggesting that this will be a Nexus 4 replacement rather than a device that will complete against the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One.

The official shots don't give much away as to the specs, but it does look like the back will be made of Kevlar, a favoured material by Motorola and already used on the Motorola RAZR I, RAZR M, and Droid Maxx range.

Rumours suggest that the Moto X will purportedly feature a 720p 4.5 inch display, as well as a 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2 GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

The cameras include a 10-megapixel shooter on the back and 2-megapixel shooter on the front. It its also likely to have Android 4.2.2 on board, with support for LTE, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 + EDR and 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

With only 10 days to the event on the 1 August, we don't have long to wait. Pocket-lint will be covering all the news as it happens.

EE has had its 4G network operational for over eight months now and the majority of the other major mobile phone carriers are gearing up to release their superfast data services too. However, a recent study has found that one in three mobile phone owners don't care. They don't want the new features afforded by 4G and are happy to stick with 3G.

UK polling expert YouGov has published a report on its recent survey into 4G tariffs. It polled 1,456 UK residents aged 16 and above between 5 and 17 May, including 275 people who already own a 4G phone and 134 already using EE's 4G data service. This represents, YouGov claims, a good cross section of society in the country.

As well as finding that 35 per cent don't have any desire to step up their data plans, only 23 per cent of those polled say that they are "excited" by the prospect of using 4G services. Over half claim that the services will be too expensive for them, while two thirds don't want to have to shell out for a new handset just to use 4G.

More positive for the networks is that 80 per cent of those surveyed say they are aware of 4G. However, only 21 per cent say they know what it offers. A staggering 31 per cent of those who know it exists say they have no idea about its benefits.

As the networks start to roll out their services, however, the message will become more clear, says Russell Feldman, Technology and Telecoms director at YouGov. "That a lot of consumers can’t see the point of 4G presents a real challenge to operators as more of them roll out 4G to their customers," he explains.

"The low levels of understanding about what 4G offers indicates that networks need to be savvy when selling it to consumers - showing not just that it exists but also what it does. Take-up is likely to be a slow burn as consumers hold off making decisions until they see it in action."

BlackBerry hopes its next flagship - called the A10 - will be a powerful handset that'll appeal to both gamers and developers, according to a new report.

Tech news website BGR, citing multiple unnamed sources, claimed on Wednesday that the A10 will have a "big focus on power and gaming." It'll also be "the most powerful, capable BlackBerry" yet.

The A10 will allegedly appeal to the gaming community with a 5-inch Super AMOLED display, 2GB of RAM and a dual-core processor. Why no quad-core on board? Well, Blackberry has battery life concerns and optimization difficulties with BB10 software that make a dual-core chip more practical.

"closely resembles" the Samsung Galaxy S4. This tidbit would align with reports in June that claimed BlackBerry wants the A10, previously codenamed Aristo, to keep up with the likes of the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S4.

BGR noted that it hasn't confirmed whether the A10 will have an 8-megapixel camera, but it does expect a "huge focus on gaming". The company would need to bolster developer relations, though, to adequately show off any gaming capabilities.

The Blackberry A10 will likely land in November as the last addition to the BB10 smartphone lineup for the year.

cell phones news (HTC M8 is 2014's flagship handset, but first will be an updated HTC One)

HTC is planning to release an updated version of the HTC One later in 2013, according to a source familiar with the matter. The source also confirmed that, internally, the 2014 flagship HTC One model is going under the M8 codename.

Starting with the plans for 2014, our source reports that HTC is already in discussions regarding the HTC M8, although is using different codenames for the device with external contacts, presumably to keep things under wraps and try and cut down on some of the leaks.

But with the M8 name out of the bag, we're hoping to see a repeat of the sort of rapturous chanting that greeted the HTC M7 prior to launch whilst gripped in CEO Peter Chou's hands. At this stage, however, aside from confirmation of the codename, we have no details on the M8 specs or design.

However, we've also been tipped off that HTC is looking at releasing an updated HTC One. Whilst there's currently a run of software updates going through, it looks like HTC might be making some more serious internal hardware changes to update the current handset.

Again, we've no details on what specs might change, but with the HTC One launching with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chipset, it's a possibility that it might be moving to Snapdragon 800, like the recently-launched Sony Xperia Z Ultra.

In 2012, HTC updated its flagship HTC One X handset is a similar way, tweaking many aspects of Sense, as well as boosting the hardware with a new front-facing camera and chipset in the HTC One X+.

With both the updated HTC One and HTC M8 details being a little on the sketchy side, we're not getting too excited as we've very little to go on at the moment and our source did say that plans could be changed. But as always, we'll keep you posted if we hear any more from our little birds.

Google routinely updated on Monday its Android Developers Dashboard to show off distribution numbers, but the most recent data collected during a 14-day period ending on 8 July reveals that Jelly Bean has finally overtaken Gingerbread.
Android Jelly Bean is now on 37.9-percent of devices. Specifically, Android 4.1.x is on 32.3-percent of devices. That’s a 33-percent increase from last month, with Android 4.2.x running on the remaining 5.6-percent of devices. In other words, Jelly Bean is now the most used version of the Android operating system.
As for Gingerbread, well - Google said it slipped to 34.1-percent. Ice Cream Sandwich sits at third place with 23.3-percent, followed by Froyo at 3.1-percent and Eclair at 1.4-percent. Honeycomb and Donut both have a meager 0.1-percent each.

"We believe the new data more accurately reflects those users who are most engaged in the Android and Google Play ecosystem," explained the Android Development team, noting Google compiled the new data from each device that visited the Google Play Store.

The company previously - prior to April 2013 anyway - gathered numbers when devices checked-in to Google servers.

Nokia is expected to unveil the Lumia 1020 on Thursday - but, in the mean time, tons of leaked information has steadily popped up about the 41-megapixel Windows Phone.

If the latest render from Windows Phone Central are indeed legit, Nokia will announce the Lumia 1020 in yellow, black and white color options at its 11 July event in New York City. The handset will also reportedly ship with built-in optical image stabilization, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

The Lumia 1020, which received its first moniker confirmation on Monday via leaked Exif data on Flickr, has previously gone by the codename EOS and others. Today's report further claimed it will have an F/2.2 lens. That's the same aperture that showed up in the leaked Flickr images.
Also, the camera phone will allegedly sport the Xenon flash that was previously rumoured. The Lumia 1020 is said to be Nokia’s biggest leap into mobile photography, with Windows Phone brawn of course.

According to several leaks in recent months, Google-owned Motorola is slated to release four smartphones to its 2013 line-up: the ULTRA (XT1080), MAXX (XT1080M), Mini (XT1030), and Moto X (XT1060). Famed EvLeaks has now provided minor details for one -- the MAXX. 

According to the leakster, the MAXX will be making its way to Verizon Wireless stateside carrying the Droid moniker. We can tell from a leaked press shot there doesn't appear to be much in the way of change from previous Motorola devices last year. The company looks to be sticking with the kevlar wrapping its come to invoke on its Droid devices. What's interesting are the trio of capacitive buttons found at the bottom of the device. Past that you'll find the par for the course speaker grill and front-facing camera. 

Common sense tells us that the MAXX will be the basis of the Droid branding on Verizon Wireless this year, following with the ULTRA as a beefier version with a bigger battery. Coincidentally, around the same time EvLeaks took to Twitter to show off the MAXX, xavierk75 posted a photo of the Droid ULTRA in white at the FCC, on the XDA Developers forum. Furthermore, the Droid Mini should serve as a smaller version of both the MAXX and Ultra (though we've yet to see it). Specs for the devices are still unknown. 

 

As for the Moto X, which has received a lot of attention in recent weeks, The Verge reported it won't carry the Verizon-Droid branding. Instead, it should be provided on more than one carrier stateside, have customisable color schemes and engravings, and carry mid-range specifications. 

Motorola has a press event planned for 11 July at the Google campus in San Francisco, but sources have indicated it won't be for the launch of the Moto X. Could the Google-owned company be planning on introducing the other Droid devices instead?

At any rate, an announcement shouldn't be too far off.

Mobile by Sainsbury's: The UK's latest mobile phone network

Sainsbury's, the UK supermarket, has announced that it is teaming up with Vodafone to launch its very own mobile phone network to take on Tesco and others.
Called Mobile by Sainsbury's, the new UK network will be run as a joint venture between the high street supermarket and Vodafone UK. It will combine the Sainsbury's brand and retail distribution with Vodafone's technology and network. The service will target Sainsbury's customers both in store and online.
Mobile by Sainsbury's, which will launch later this summer, will "reward customer loyalty, and offer great quality value-for-money mobile products together with attractive offers," says the new venture. Nectar points will also be on offer, although details on pricing and why it will be different to Vodafone's standard offering haven't been given.

"We are delighted to announce this partnership. Together with Vodafone, we'll be able to develop mobile products and services that represent great value for Sainsbury's customers," said Justin King, Sainsbury's CEO.
Luke Jensen, Sainsbury's group development director adds, "Our customers trust us to provide top quality products and service at fair prices, and Mobile by Sainsbury's feels like a natural extension of our brand as well as a great way to reward our customers."
The news comes as Three announced plans to shake up the pay-as-you-go market in the UK, offering a one tariff fits all offer. From 1 July Three PAYG customers will be able to make calls for 3p a minute, texts for 2p a minute, and use data for 1p per MB.

Since pay-as-you-go mobile price plans were introduced the networks have looked for more and 

more ways to offers incentives to get customer cash. Credit plans can often even look like normal monthly tariffs, with complex top-up schemes and included minutes, texts and data. Three has decided to throw caution to the wind by ditching all of them and has taken its PAYG offering back to basics.

As top-up plans were originally, Three's new pay-as-you-go offer simplifies the process. You will pay 3p for each minute of talk time, 2p a text and 1p for 1MB of data. That's it. And every penny of credit you add to your account will go to paying for those functions. "Credit lasts until every penny is spent," claims the network.

"The number of complex pay-as-you-go tariffs, add-ons and options available is mindboggling," says Thomas Malleschitz, marketing director at Three. "Consumers are forced into choosing where they want best value - whether that's calls, texts or internet. Our new rates strip things right back to basics with a simple, clear and transparent rate for calls, texts and internet use that offers clear value across the board. It's important to us that our Pay As You Go customers can use our Ultrafast network to chat, text and enjoy the internet without making a trade-off on value. This is pay-as-you-go in its purest form."

The new pricing structure applies to existing Three PAYG customers as well as new ones. Those already on a pay-as-you-go plan with credit remaining will be able to "use their remaining credit as they wish," says the company.

cell phones news (Sony begins pushing out Xperia Z Android 4.2.2 upgrade)

Sony has made good on its promise to upgrade the Xperia Z smartphone to the latest version of Android. Starting today, Xperia Z users should find Android 4.2.2 being pushed to their devices.
One of the notable weak points of the Xperia Z, the smartphone launched with 4.1.2, but that now appears to have been fixed. The update is being pushed over the air and appears to be being received predominantly by LTE models at the moment.
The Xperia ZL only recently had the same update. It brings little in terms of UI changes, bar the ability to use special lock screen widgets. If you want to check to see if the update is ready for your phone, you can force check for an update via Android's settings.
Alternatively you can use the PC companion app included with the Xperia Z to do the same thing. As is always the case with Android updates, they require carrier approval in order to be pushed out. It's over to the UK networks to decide who gets the 4.2.2 update first.

Nokia teased last week that its upcoming event is for the rumoured Lumia smartphone with a 41-megapixel camera, and now, after months of codenames and speculation, the company's elusive camera phone might have an official name. 

Serial leakster @evleaks, who has a spot-on record, tweeted the following on Tuesday: "EOS = Nokia Lumia 1020". So, it seems the EOS phone, which is said to boast a 41-megapixel, Symbian-powered PureView 808 camera sensor, will be the latest addition to the Nokia Lumia lineup of Windows Phones. 

The Nokia EOS is a codename like how the Lumia 925 was called “Catwalk”. The EOS aspect of the codename likely came from Canon EOS, because it means "Electro-Optical System" in DSLRs. Rumours have long speculated that Nokia would label the EOS with a Lumia name, although the specific number was a complete mystery until now. 

Aside from today's name drop from @evleaks and last week's tease straight from Nokia, hints that a new Lumia is coming have consistently popped up in recent months. 

A Nokia phone with the number RM-877, for instance, quietly moved through the Federal Communications Commission earlier this month. The device sported certain tech specifications that suggested it is likely the Nokia EOS. The details in the FCC documents claimed the camera-like phone comes with a camera grip and charging cover - and that it's just a fraction bigger than the Lumia 925.
The EOS is essentially a Lumia 920 with a huge camera, so the succeeding name of 1020 does seem likely. Nokia announced the Nokia Lumia 925 earlier this year as a lighter and thinner version of the Lumia 920 with an aluminum body. 
As for Nokia's New York event on 11 July, where the 41-megapixel Lumia phone will probably unveil, a live broadcast will occur at 11 a.m. EST on conversations.nokia.com.

hello everybody we all heard that Huawei has introduced another mid-range, 7-inch tablet with voice-calling capability, called the MediaPad 7 Vogue. 

Between ASUS, Samsung and Huawei, to name a few, there are plenty of 7-inch tablets floating around the marketplace with just as many mediocre specs. The MediaPad 7 Vogue is no different.

It's a device that lets users make network calls with a built-in receiver for direct calling, but it only offers a 1,024 x 600 IPS display, quad-core Huawei 1.2GHz Cortex-A9 CPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. Huawei said the 3G module supports DC-HSPA+, while the Wi-Fi connection supports 802.11b/g/n.

The MediaPad 7 Vogue also offers a 3-megapixel rear camera, Android 4.1 with Emotion UI 1.5, and a microSD expansion slot. 

These specs mirror another Huawei tablet called the MediaPad 7 Lite. Huawei's attempt to take on the Nexus 7 debuted with the MediaPad 7 Lite, as it was the company's first tablet to launch in the UK and similarly featured a 1.2GHz Cortex A8 processor and 7-inch IPS display.
The MediaPad 7 Vogue is another entry-level product from Huawei, but it is a nice option for budget-conscious consumers who want a smartphone and tablet combo cheaply. The device will launch in China this month in black and white color options.
There are no other details in regards to pricing, but Huawei said other markets would follow.

HTC could be planning a Windows Phone 8 powered One variant that uses the GDR3 update for the operating system. Rumours point to a device based very closely on the HTC One's design, but not an exact copy.

Display size is said to be between 4 to 5-inches, although sources speaking to Neowin haven't confirmed an accurate measurement. The body is said to be made predominantly from metal and sporting the inevitable Beats Audio logo.

Excitingly, the GDR3 update for Windows Phone is said to also be included. The update is said to bring new live tiles, quad-core support and the ability to use 1080p displays.

Rumours point to an Autumn release for the Windows Phone powered HTC One. No word yet on whether UltraPixel technology from the One will be translated across, but in previous conversations with HTC, the company had suggested that it wouldn't be.

"We are equally committed to the Windows platform, so we will do what we can," said Symon Whitehorn, who worked on the development of the HTC One camera in an earlier interview with cell phones news, telling us that "there are no current plans to migrate" the One's camera features to Windows Phone.
