Apple patent looks to solve problems inherent to OLED displays

Unknown | 09:03 | , ,

Apple patent looks to solve problems inherent to OLED displaysApple has yet to actually release a device that uses an OLED display, although the technology has been rumored to come to Apple's various mobile devices from time to time. But, just because the tech hasn't been in an Apple product doesn't mean that Apple hasn't been working on OLED displays. A new patent shows that Apple has been trying to solve some of the inherent problems with OLED.

According to the USPTO, Apple has created a way to help with the problem of OLED displays "aging" faster than LCD displays. While OLED displays have the benefits of thinner and lighter than LCD (something body-image obsessed Apple is always looking for), the light output can change over time. Apple's filing for "Organic light emitting diode having photodiodes" uses photosensors built into the display to detect these changes and compensate accordingly.

Additionally, the multiple photosensors would be able to act as light meters for different areas of the display, so if the top part of your screen is in sunlight, but the lower is in shade, the display can adjust and change the brightness in different pixel groups in order to have the best display for different lighting conditions.

All in all, it sounds like some pretty good ideas. Whether or not they make it into an actual device is another story.

Apple will release a fifth-generation iPad in September, while a second-generation iPad mini is undergoing further specification upgrades and might not debut at the same time, according to a new report.
Taiwanese news website Digitimes reported the iPad 5 would sport a slimmer bezel design and therefore have a bigger viewing area, as well as an improved battery life and only one LED tube. The fourth-generation iPad has two LED tubes, so Apple would need to toss the secondary tube to get a slimmer bezel on the tablet.
The report also claimed that suppliers had entered pilot production for the new 9.7-inch iPad - and had currently produced enough inventory to "satisfy demand for the initial launch". DigiTimes, which doesn’t have the greatest track record, noted Apple should give shipment estimates in July or August.
As for the second-generation iPad mini, Apple is reportedly considering whether it will introduce a Retina display and has even prodded upstream supply partners to reduce the bezel The company apparently prefers a bezel-less design like that of "Samsung and HTC's large-size smartphones".
Such drastic last-minute decisions seem unusual for Apple, and even Digitimes asserted the hold up could push the new iPad mini's release to the fourth quarter. Apple CEO Tim Cook has previously mentioned that a line of new products would launch in the autumn and during 2014 - and many have expected the Retina iPad mini to be one of them.watche this video

cell phones news(Apple's iOS 7 beta 2 releases with support for iPad)

ggbb | 15:26 | , ,

Apple released the first beta of iOS 7 with iPhone support after the software originally unveiled at WWDC in California, and now the company has pushed out a second beta for testing that works with iPad.
Beta 2 for iOS 7 became available to paid developers through Apple's over-the-air system on iOS devices, but it will also land on the iOS Developer Center, according to 9to5Mac. The update brings a number of fixes and improvements including new male and female Siri voices.
However, the most notable addition is the Voice Memos app. It will appear on developers' home screen and boasts a refreshed look, new icon for displaying sound wavelengths and the ability to record by tapping a large red button.

Voice clips in the Voice Memos app are editable, as first noted by Apple Insider, and users can send them via message, mail or AirDrop. All recordings are accessible at the bottom of the screen once saved, and they can further be saved to iCloud.
Apple's second beta for iOS 7 is available now.

cell phones news(iPhone owners are mindless zombies, says Nokia in new Lumia 925 ad)

ggbb | 14:32 | , ,

Nokia has unveiled a zombie-filled advert for its brand new Lumia 925 smartphone. The ad shows iPhone-holding zombies gradually closing in on a Nokia user wandering the streets at night.
The joke is that the LED flash on the iPhone 5 causes pictures to white out and produce red eye, making you look like a zombie. Obviously Nokia is keen to show off the Lumia's low-light imaging capabilities, which wouldn't require a zombie creating flash.

It's an interesting advert and one that features the new Nokia phone only very briefly in the hands of the character being chased by zombies. The iPhone 5 makes more of an appearance than Nokia's own handset.
Still it's good, fun and the 925 is a great handset. On sale now, it can be picked up SIM free for £549, or  you can browse our handy deals round-up here.

cell phones news (Rumoured iPhone 5S pictures show designs won't change)

Unknown | 13:45 | , ,

A supposed image of the iPhone 5S frontplate has appeared on the internet and from the look of it, Apple won't be changing its design. The phone, which should launch alongside iOS 7, appears to adopt the same looks as the current-generation iPhone, not breaking from Apple's trend toward smartphone design updates every two years.
While it isn't hugely exciting on the face of it, Apple has moved about parts on the inside of the phone, which should translate to added space for more-powerful or new hardware - say NFC or a bigger camera unit.
The pictures, if true, could mean that production for the new iPhone 5S has already begun. What's perhaps more exciting is that BGR has optioned pictures of other parts, in particular a SIM tray which features a slightly different colour scheme. This could mean a new set of iPhone colours available when the handset ships.
Traditionally Apple rolls out its new iPhone around September or October time, so expect the 5S to turn up about then. Whether or not it will look the same or come in different colours, remains to be seen.

cell phones news (Microsoft Uses Siri Again To Take Jabs At The iPad)

Unknown | 20:50 | ,

Microsoft is at it again with its iPad-jabbing ads for Windows 8 tablets, using Siri as it’s weapon. This time around, the ad showcases Dell’s XPS 10 tablet against the world’s most popular tablet.
The ad is simple and to the point. Microsoft uses Apple’s Siri to make comments on the differences between the two tablets, all of which favor in the Windows 8 option. Clever.The features highlight the “zoom-out” function of the start screen, multiple windows, and expandable storage, with the kicker being the price point. For a limited time, the Dell XPS 10 is only $399 vs the $499 Apple iPad. Even still, we’d say that Apple’s significantly larger App Store should justify the premium, but features like expandable storage should definitely appeal to the customer.
With rather pitiful sales numbers for Window 8, Microsoft seems to take no issue pulling out all the stops with these type of ads. And we’re just going to go out on a limb here and say that the ads likely won’t have people rushing out to buy a Windows 8 tablet. Nonetheless, it’s cute to see the company trying.
Now if only Apple would start the I’m A Mac type of ads again.
Have a look at the ad below and tell us what you think. If we’ve learned anything from the ad, it’s not to pinch Siri.

cell phones news (Will iOS 7 work on my iPhone? Which devices support which features)

Unknown | 20:23 | , ,

Apple has introduced iOS 7 and a bucket of shiny, new features at WWDC in San Francisco. The new update to iOS 6 promises to deliver a new operating system later this year. While many are excited for the overhauled software, the big question is whether it will work on your current iPhone or whether you will need to upgrade your Apple smartphone to benefit.
As with any new version of iOS, Apple has made much of iOS 7 only available to a select few iOS devices. Apple's iOS 7 is still in beta and will not publicly release until this autumn, but now is the ideal time to figure out which iOS devices can update to the new OS, whether to plan for an upgrade, or whether the upgrade is even worth it.

iOS 7 supported devices

Apple's forthcoming iOS 7 update will work on the following devices:
iPhone
  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 5
iPad
  • iPad 2
  • Third-generation iPad with Retina
  • Fourth-generation iPad with Retina,
  • iPad mini
iPod touch
  • Fifth-generation iPod touch.
Any other iOS device, like the first iPad and the iPhone 3GS, cannot officially install iOS 7 when it releases.
It's also not that simple. If you've got an iPhone 4 running iOS 7 you might still not get everything. Apple has also had to limit some of the features some users get in the new iOS due to certain hardware constraints.

iTunes Radio

Apple's iTunes Radio is an Internet radio service that unveiled at WWDC earlier this month. Luckily, unlike some of the other new iOS 7 features, iTunes Radio is compatible with the following devices:
iPhone
  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 5
iPad
  • iPad 2
  • Third-generation iPad with Retina
  • Fourth-generation iPad with Retina
  • iPad mini
iPod touch
  •  Fifth-generation iPod touch

AirDrop

AirDrop is a feature previously found on the company's desktop operating system that has now come to the company's mobile operating system. It enables users to share content and files with other supported iOS devices running iOS 7 or later, or Mac computers running OS X 10.7 or later without a Wi-Fi network or connected device.
Apple is adding AirDrop to iOS 7, but it will only support the following devices:
iPhone
  • iPhone 5
iPad
  • Fourth-generation iPad with Retina
  • iPad mini
iPod touch
  •  Fifth-generation iPod touch

Camera app: Panorama, Swipe, Square and Live Filters

The Camera app in iOS 7 offers panoramic shooting, which first launched in last year's iOS 6, the ability to swipe to quickly capture a photo, and new Square capture that simply frames the shot like Instagram. Speaking of Instagram, the Camera app will also boast live previews of retro-looking filters in iOS 7.
Panoramas are available on iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and fifth-generation iPod touch, while swipe to capture and Square will work on iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, third-generation iPad with Retina, fourth-generation iPad with Retina, iPad mini and fifth-generation iPod touch. The Live Filters feature is compatible with iPhone 5 and the fifth-generation iPod touch.

Photos app: Filters

As with videos, users won't be able to apply filters to Panoramas at capture. However, they can apply filters with the updated Photos app that will also add all panoramic shots and videos to their own respective folders. The Photos app also now enables users auto-enhance, rotate, correct red-eye, crop a captured panorama, or share photos. Filters are only available on the following devices:
iPhone
  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 5
iPod touch
  •  Fifth-generation iPod touch

Siri

Siri, Apple's intelligent personal assistant and knowledge navigator that first released in 2011, is still a part of iOS 7, but it is limited to the following devices:
iPhone
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 5
iPad
  • Third-generation iPad with Retina
  • Fourth-generation iPad with Retina
  • iPad mini
iPod touch
  •  Fifth-generation iPod touch
In addition, the new female and male voices are initially limited to US English, French and German.
Apple's website has a full list of iOS 7 specs and more information on compatibility. Moreover, keep in mind, that Apple could change compatibility with future iOS updates, so keep checking Pocket-lint for the latest.

  • cell phones news(Apple to deepen Bluetooth integration in iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks, offer Notification Center support)

    Unknown | 17:03 | ,

Apple's new iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks software will feature major Bluetooth enhancements, offering deeper integration with Bluetooth-connected accessories, according to the Bluetooth Special Interest Group.
The Bluetooth SIG - the controlling body of the Bluetooth standard that collaborates with more than 18,000 companies worldwide - certifies products for manufacturers that want to include the short-range technology. It announced on Wednesday that Apple would soon allow Bluetooth-connected devices to use Notification Center, among other things.
The group elaborated in a press release on its website: "Apple revealed iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks will natively support the latest version of the Human Interface Device profile for Bluetooth Smart, Air Drop, which uses Bluetooth Smart technology to securely discover and connect devices for file sharing, and its Application State Preservation and Restoration services and Apple Notification Center Service for Bluetooth Smart accessories."
In other words, Apple will fully integrate Bluetooth into iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks. This will encourage and streamline the development of apps, peripherals and accessories - such as MFi game controllers - that use Bluetooth connectivity.
Calling the Bluetooth integration "unprecedented," the Bluetooth SIG further said Apple has raised standards with its effort. However, the California company has been noticeably bolstering Bluetooth Smart capabilities in many of its products since the introduction of the iPhone 4S in 2011.
“This sets the table for some incredible innovation developers can bring to market,” wrote Suke Jawanda,Bluetooth SIG CMO, in a blog post. “A lot of this is deeper plumbing level innovation in the OS empowers developers to create new use cases to make life better for consumers—from the novel to the life-saving and everything in between."
Jawanda gave an example where a sports app could seamlessly push an alert to a Bluetooth Smart watch every time a team scored. Users obviously benefit from this functionality because they would spend less time checking their smartphones for updates and more time living.
Developers who want to make use of the latest Bluetooth enhancements in iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks can check out the Bluetooth Application Accelerator for more detailed implementation and developer guidelines.

  • cell phones news (Carved iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4 wood cases pictures and hands-on)

    Unknown | 20:29 | , , ,

For the most part, a phone case really isn't a particularly exciting thing. They have to be especially beautiful in order for them to earn the right to wrap our favourite smartphones.
Thankfully, this pair of laser engraved iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4 cases are more than up to the task of keeping our handsets looking good, while stopping them smashing every time we drop them.
Put together by Carved based in Elkhart, Indiana, the cases started life as a tree. The wood used has been selected by Carved for its look and feel and it shows. The iPhone 5 case has a lovely grain which complements the design, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S4 option, with its intricate engraving, uses a cleaner cut of wood.

The Galaxy S4 case really is the standout product here. Carved lets you use your own design, should you be so inclined, but we really like those it has on offer. The detail on the Aztec drawing cut into the wood is astonishing, this really is something you need to see up close to enjoy. If you want to replicate the same design on an iPhone case, then Carved also offers that.
The detail also gives an idea of just what the company's laser cutters are capable of, should you fancy sending in a design of your own. Some of the gaps in the engraving are only a few millimetres apart, so we imagine even the most intricate of drawings could be replicated.

Also worth noting is how"'fresh" our cases were. Carved is clearly a small local business which turns out these lovely cases on demand. So much so that the review units sent to us had the smell of fresh wood still nicely wrapped up in their packaging. Using the iPhone 5 with case as an in-car satnav is like having the best air freshener imaginable  for your car.
We will say that Carved could do a bit of work on the actual shape of the plastic case surround. On the Galaxy S4 it didn't sit all that plush with the phone, which means it adds quite a bit of bulk to the handset. Also the lip on either side of the case doesn't extend beyond the screen, which means a face-first drop with the case will probably result in cracked glass.

cell phones news(Larger display iPhone rumours continue to swirl, colours and cheap models again suggested)

    abdou | 04:16 | ,

Barely a week passes without speculation about new iPhone models. This time Reuters cites comments from "people with knowledge of the matter" suggesting that Apple is looking a larger display the iPhone.
These sources go as far as suggesting that Apple is looking at a 4.7-inch model and a 5.7-inch model, looking to compete with flagship Android devices and make inroads in to the phablet space. Reuters say that the source of its information is from the supply chain in Asia.
"They constantly change product specifications almost to the final moment, so you're not really sure whether this is the final prototype," a source is quoted as saying.
Whilst that still puts this firmly in the realms of speculation and far from definite, sources continue to suggest that Apple will have a plastic-bodied iPhone model this year, in addition to its premium handset. The cheaper model rumour is joined by a $99 price point, but again, this is still all rumour.
However, what was interesting about the iOS 7 launch at WWDC was the amount of time that Apple dedicated to telling its followers how dominant it is in the mobile space.
There was no holding back on pointing to advantages over Google's Android operating system, which some may interpret as Apple being on the defensive.
Certainly, Apple's latest operating system refresh that was previewed at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, brings the biggest change to the iPhone that we've seen so far, as the company looks to stay ahead in the mobile game.
Speculation aside, however, Apple's update cycle for the iPhone has been pretty consistent over the past few years, so we'd still say we're looking at an Autumn release date for the new iPhone, almost certainly in line with the public availability of iOS 7.
